The study's authors, employing a dynamic simulator called REBOUND, simulated Neptune's moon system with Triton's arrival. They found that the captured KBO's highly eccentric, backward orbit disrupted the existing moon system, leading to the destruction or ejection of most original moons. Some debris formed Neptune's ring system and tiny 'ring-moons' like Proteus.
Intriguingly, the simulations revealed that in about 20% of the runs, Triton's influence caused one of the native inner moons to enter a stable, highly elongated, tilted orbit, resembling Nereid's current path. This finding implies that Nereid might be an original moon of Neptune, kicked into its peculiar orbit by Triton's arrival.
If this theory holds true, Nereid could provide invaluable insights into the formation of the Neptunian system. Its distant orbit, relatively untouched by Triton's chaos, offers a glimpse into the system's ancient past. However, confirming this theory will require further exploration, as no probe has ventured that way in over a decade.
